UTMB World Series comes to the Keystone State: Rothrock by UTMB joins the North American calendar of events in 2026

The UTMB World Series is pleased to announce the addition of the new Rothrock by UTMB®, joining the circuit as the second event on the Eastern side of the U.S. alongside Grindstone Running Festival by UTMB®. The first edition of Rothrock by UTMB is scheduled to take place on May 16-17, 2026, bringing the UTMB World Series experience to Pennsylvania's Rothrock State Forest for the very first time.

Continuing the journey: new chapter & trusted team

Featuring 50km and 25km distances, the new event builds on the history of the Rothrock Trail Challenge. First established in 2009, the Rothrock Trail Challenge grew into a rugged, community-driven race that drew runners of all types from around the country, celebrating them with the tagline: “For those about to Rothrock, we salute you!”. UTMB World Series is also proud to partner with the previous Rothrock race management team to carry this heritage forward through Rothrock by UTMB.

“We are excited to welcome runners to the wilds of Pennsylvania and offer an experience like none other, that is rugged, raw, and uniquely beautiful,” said Meira Minard, Co-Race Director for the Rothrock by UTMB. “With more than 95,000 acres, the Rothrock State Forest offers an amazing diverse challenge due to its beautiful scenery and mountainous terrain with an unforgettable climb up Tussey Mountain. We are proud to combine these epic courses with the incredible UTMB World Series experience and showcase just what makes this area so special this coming May.”

"We are thrilled to continue the legacy of Rothrock by UTMB, to carry forward this journey, and to collaborate closely with the local teams," said Florian Lamblin, Executive Director of UTMB International. "This new collaboration will allow to bring the very best of the UTMB World Series experience while celebrating the unique landscapes, trails, and communities of Rothrock. We can’t wait to offer runners an unforgettable adventure in a region that truly embodies the spirit of trail running and community."

Pennsylvania at its peak

Set in the Rothrock State Forest, just outside of State College, Pennsylvania (affectionately known as “Happy Valley”), the race will immerse runners in the rugged beauty, wild trails, and vibrant outdoor culture of the region. Carved through Rothrock State Forest’s wild sandstone ridges, fern-covered valleys, and rhododendron tunnels, the course makes the most of all the region has to offer and is designed to provide adventure at every turn for runners looking for a unique challenge.

The 25K course will continue to follow the classic Rothrock Trail Challenge route, a course that has been a favored stop for the classic La Sportiva Mountain Cup Series.

The new 50k course will traverse the iconic Tussey Ridge Trail where runners are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding mountain ranges, pass the legendary “beer tap” stop, let it all go on the descent of the Tussey Mountain Extension and cruise through the rhododendron tunnels of John Wert before looping through Bear Meadows Natural Area, a National Natural Landmark.

“It's always a great day - a day spent with trail family soaking up the magic of Rothrock!” said Brock Rider, a local trail runner based in State College. “This epic course will test your mind and body. From the beautiful ridge trails to the punchy climbs and gnarly descents, this race has a little bit of everything. Just leave your road shoes at home.”

Giving back to local community

The organizers are committed to giving back over $40,000 to the greater Rothrock community over the next three years, reinforcing their dedication to the people and landscapes that make this region so special. These funds will be awarded as community grants to local nonprofits that nurture outdoor recreation and protect the trails and natural spaces. A standout example is the Rothrock Trail Alliance, whose tireless work ensures that trails remain accessible, safe, and inspiring for runners, hikers, and explorers of all kinds.

“Runners who have experienced the Rothrock State Forest before know exactly what makes this location so special,” said Scott Sheeder, Co-Race Director for the Rothrock by UTMB. “We know that challenging terrain, stunning scenery, and friendly community are what will make this race such an incredible experience and Meira and I are thrilled to invite all runners to come and enjoy everything that Rothrock and State College have to offer.”

The UTMB World Series experience comes to wilds of Pennsylvania

UTMB World Series is proud to expand its presence by welcoming this new east coast event to the circuit in North America. This new race will offer runners across North America a unique chance to experience the spirit of the UTMB World Series closer to home. It also provides an additional opportunity to collect Running Stones and work toward qualifying for the UTMB World Series Finals at HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc. This 12th North American event strengthens the connection between local passion and international ambition, bringing the UTMB World Series experience to more runners than ever before.

“Rothrock by UTMB represents a tremendous opportunity to drive new economic activity while showcasing the strength of our outdoor community,” said Eric Engelbarts, Executive Director of the Happy Valley Sports & Entertainment Alliance. “Events of this caliber help elevate the overall experience for residents and visitors and reinforce Happy Valley’s position as a premier destination. We are proud to welcome athletes who will contribute to the vitality of our region.”
