“IT’S MY JOB”: Interview with Fernando Ordóñez - Tenerife BlueTrail by UTMB® Race Director
Fernando Ordóñez is passionate about the mountains and has a deep connection to his homeland, particularly Tenerife.
A sports enthusiast and dedicated runner, he has been involved in the Tenerife BlueTrail since its inception. His commitment and leadership have played a key role in shaping the event into one of the world’s premier trail races, now in its 13th edition.
How would you define your role? What does it involve?
As Race Director of the Tenerife BlueTrail by UTMB, my role is to oversee every aspect of the event’s organisation to ensure its success. This includes coordinating with local authorities, the organising team, and volunteers, while also managing logistics, environmental permits, safety, and event promotion. Above all, my priority is to create an unforgettable experience for runners while safeguarding Tenerife’s natural environment.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing such a diverse range of participants take on the challenge, pushing their limits while discovering Tenerife’s breathtaking landscapes. Hearing their stories of perseverance and witnessing the camaraderie that forms during the race is extremely gratifying. I also take great pride in showcasing the island’s natural and cultural heritage through trail running.
What have been your biggest challenges, and how have you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges is ensuring participant safety in a high-mountain environment, where weather conditions can change rapidly. To manage this, we mobilise a team of 700 people across various logistical and safety operations. We also implement strict safety protocols – thorough course inspections for example – and work closely with accident and emergency response teams.
Another challenge is minimising the race’s environmental impact. To address this, we’ve introduced sustainable measures such as reducing single-use plastics, promoting respect for local flora and fauna, and advocating responsible practices among runners, volunteers, and spectators. Ensuring that the race continues to grow each year while staying true to its essence and deep connection to nature is an ongoing challenge that we tackle with passion and dedication.
