Chihuahua by UTMB®: the land of the Rarámuris, the first ultra-runners
From 2 to 4 October, the 3rd edition of Chihuahua by UTMB® – its first as part of the UTMB World Series – will bring together more than 1,800 participants, joined by nearly 200 Rarámuri athletes, the guardians of local traditions. Strong local roots are evident with 86% of runners from Mexico, including 21% from the State of Chihuahua. Women make up 37% of the field – a figure in line with the Latin American regional average.
On the sporting front, Victor Larocque (CAN, UTMB Index 773) and Elena Ormon (USA, UTMB Index 642) will headline the Rarámuri 100M, while Julián Vinasco Marin (COL, UTMB Index 788) tackles the Wériga 100K. Local athletes Moises Martinez Peralta (MEX, UTMB Index 818) and Josefina Pérez (MEX, UTMB Index 692) will contest the Akáa 59K, alongside Frida Cervantes (MEX, UTMB Index 608) in the Komakali 37K. Former professional cyclist Tony Baca, from Chihuahua, will make his trail-running debut on the Akáa 59K.
Off the trails, Chihuahua by UTMB will showcase Rarámuri heritage with two traditional ball games – collective endurance contests handed down through generations. In partnership with the True Messages association and supported by UTMB Cares, the event also strengthens its cultural and social commitments: launching a programme to promote women in trail running; awarding finisher medals and gifts handmade by Rarámuri artisans; supporting local races with entries and equipment; and ensuring equal participation for men and women. Young talent will also be encouraged with equal prizes for girls and boys in the children’s races – combining sporting excellence with cultural celebration and community engagement. Find out more.
