prior to a serious workplace accident falling from on top of a wind turbine I was a successful ultra runner/endurance athlete in Australia. My legs got caught in a ladder 110meters up which saved me but also caused immense damage to my legs and feet. 4years on, 8 major surgeries, excruciating recovery and rehabilitation learning to walk again 3 times in that period in a dream to run again in some format, something (the only thing) that has ever made me feel free running in nature and on the trails. it has been a long road but in 2024 i made my comeback to running as an adaptive athlete, firstly in my hometown Ballarat half marathon in April 2024, then in October 2024 broke the world record for fastest marathon on crutches (t44 paralympic class, both lower limb compromised) competed in arguably Australia's toughest miler completing the last leg of the GPT100 relay team that I formed for adaptive athletes called beyond endurance and to wind up 2024 competed in my first ever HYROX event, an endurance fitness course as an adaptive athletes finishing 2nd. 2024 was certainly a breakthrough year of letting go and adaption back to the sport I love. My mission has changed enormously since this accident, I wish to open up the space of endurance running to adaptive athletes in Australia and plan to do this the only way i know is by example. You can see my accident and comeback easily on Facebook - Mick Marshall, Instagram - mickmarshall_ and also hear of it on a recent podcast - The cowbell podcast-extraordinary everyday (can find on Facebook page) My goals for 2025 is to grow awareness that disability is not the disadvantage and that the adaptive athlete space for endurance events is built and accepted in THIS COUNTRY and all over the world if opportunity is given. I am grateful for UTMB for opening this space up and am planning on running the OCC 50km later this year in this new body as an adaptive athlete. i could use all the assistance that can be provided to enter the race. I will be running the UTA 50km in May for my stone as well as Hut2hut 50km (the archie) in February for index points. Both these events are in Australia. Id appreciates as much advice on this as I can get to qualify. I have a significant background in endurance events prior, does this help? I am looking forward to launching into a year unshackled and with a sense of freedom in 2025.
