Elite runner’s qualification for UTMB® World Series Finals

Held annually at the renowned UTMB® Mont-Blanc, the UTMB® World Series Finals are the pinnacle of trail running. The slots allocated to elite runners on the UTMB® World Series Finals are strictly reserved for those who qualify by participating in a UTMB® World Series Event or UTMB® World Series Major in the 15 months preceding the UTMB® World Series Finals.

Special rules

Change of category*

The top 10 male and female (UTMB® World Series Majors) and top 3 male and female (UTMB® World Series Events) will secure a bib to the corresponding category of the UTMB® World Series Finals. Athletes will have to pay for that bib. They are given the possibility to change category for the Finals if they want to, providing they notify the UTMB Team before mid-June prior to the Finals and justify this request.

Unused slots*

If, among the top 10 male and female (UTMB® World Series Majors) and top 3 male and female (UTMB® World Series Events) some runners do not want (or do not need – because they already got one) to use their slot to enter UTMB® World Series Finals, the slots will be kept for a special one go allocation in the first half of June. These slots, as well as any other slots available for any other reason, will be offered to the finishers of a minimum one UTMB® World Series Event or UTMB® World Series Major qualifying race of 50K, 100K or 100M in the past year, ordered on the base of the best UTMB® Index. If a runner doesn’t take the slot, this slot will be offered to the next runner; and so on until all the slots will be allocated.

*In both cases access to UTMB® requires runners to have completed a 100K or 100M qualifying race.

Races taking place less than 3 months before the UTMB® Mont-Blanc

The qualification period is open over 15 months to allow elite runners to better manage their calendar and their recovery periods. Therefore, for races taking place 3 months before the UTMB® World Series Finals, any qualified elite runner can choose whether to participate in the UTMB® World Series Finals the same year or only the following year. We could consider giving a wild card for a shorter race for the same year for those runners who decide to use their entry slot for the Final in which they have a slot in the following year.

Age groups

The Age groups are based on those of World Athletics. All possible age-groups are presented here, including those we need for youth races. All age-group athletes must participate and compete in the age-group division corresponding to the athlete’s age as of December 31 of the year of the Event.

Performance slots available for age group athletes

For each Major, the number of available slots is 55 for each final

QUALIFICATION FOR THE FINALS IS ALSO POSSIBLE THANKS TO THE CLASSIFICATION IN THE AGE CATEGORY FOR FINISHERS OF THE UTMB® WORLD SERIES MAJORS

The rule is as follows:

  • Overall allocation of approximately 55 bibs for age category per race
  • At least one bib is assigned for each age category represented
  • Other bibs are awarded in proportion to the number of runners present in each age category

Minimum Age to register for the UTMB® World Series

The rule here under applies in the absence of National regulation in place from National Federation of Athletics.
